Our work is focused on the establishment of a natural corridor for wild animals linking Velebit’s protected areas with the wider landscape, and on the protection and restoration of natural ecological processes and trophic interactions across large areas. Together with our partners, we want to show the benefits of natural, year-round grazing with semi-wild horses and large herbivores on the Lika plains.
We plan to develop nature-based tourism focused on the region’s natural heritage that can contribute to the sustainable development of the local community and improve their quality of life. Through community outreach and educational activities, we hope to promote rewilding and demonstrate its impact as a new, effective approach to nature conservation that works for the benefit of nature and people.
Natural succession and regeneration of benthic communities lead to enhanced water transparency and more robust larval dispersal via marine currents, strengthening regional ecological connectivity. Restoration of a diverse habitat mosaic, particularly the recovery of Posidonia meadows, promotes sediment stabilisation and significantly augments carbon sequestration capacity. Community-led activities with divers and volunteers would be organised in order to clean up ghost gear.
