Rewilding Velebit Foundation is a non-profit organization and local partner of Rewilding Europe in Croatia. It was established for the purpose of promoting a return to sustainable wild nature and raising awareness of the need to preserve wildlife in the Velebit Mountains, and other regions of Croatia.
Rewilding Europe is an independent non-profit organization, established in 2011 in the Netherlands. Its mission is to make Europe a wilder place, giving more space to nature and natural processes in 10 regions of Europe. These rewilding landscapes act as a practical demonstration of rewilding models and tools. By showing what rewilding can achieve, these new wild landscapes inspire others to get involved in rewilding.
As part of Rewilding Europe, we want to make Europe a wilder place, with more space for wild nature, wildlife and natural processes. In bringing back the variety of life, we will continue to explore new ways for people to enjoy and earn a fair living from the wild.
By the end of 2030, the Velebit Mountains will be recognised as one of the finest, wildest, largest, best protected and most famous wildlife and wilderness areas in Mediterranean Europe. Wherever you are in these mountains, you will be able to experience wildlife nearby and know that even the most rare and endangered species exist here in populations that are stable, resilient and recovering.
Rewilding is being practiced at scale across Croatia and Europe. The application of rewilding principles, models and tools is delivering measurable, demonstrable, and sustained benefits for nature and people. Together with our partners, we are creating a Europe that is richer in nature and more resilient to climate change.
