Nature-based economies can be a driving force behind economic development in rural areas, which are often characterized by depopulation and land abandonment. Rewilding offers numerous opportunities to develop an economy based on wild nature for the benefit of the entire community.
Rewilding Velebit Foundation works on the development of products and services based around the wild nature of the beautiful Lika plateau and the coastal area of the Velebit Mountains. By visiting our rewilding area, you will experience the great wilderness of Velebit with all your senses and support our work and the work of our partners, including small entrepreneurs running sustainable nature-based businesses.
Wildlife watching hides
Experience wildlife up close, enjoy watching the wild animals from our newly built hides that will provide you with an unforgettable experience, whether you are a professional photographer or an enthusiastic amateur. Equipped for a multi-day stay, these high-quality hides built from local materials are located in the remote wild landscapes of the Velebit Mountains. We offer five wildlife watching hides, three of which are designed for watching mammals such as bear, lynx, roe deer, red deer, wild boar, and others, whereas two have a water feature to potentially attract more birds such as goshawk, buzzard, Eurasian hoopoe, White-backed woodpecker, Grey wagtail, and many others. Guests can choose to spend an afternoon and evening in the hide, one night, or several days and nights.

Tauros safari
Imagine a sprawling, high altitude grassland, ringed by the craggy limestone peaks of the Velebit Mountains. Roaming herds of Tauros, Konik and Bosnian mountain horses graze this verdant plain, creating mosaic (half-open, half-wooded) habitats that are home to thriving wild nature. Tauros are bovines that have been specifically back-bred to fulfil the ecological role of aurochs, an ancient wild bovine species that is now extinct. These modern-day surrogate animals thus play a vital natural grazing role in a range of landscapes.
You can enjoy this breathtaking scenery, watch the Tauros roam, and experience their wild spirits on a visit to the Lika plateau with our tailor-made photo safari tours. Our photo safari lasts for two to three hours.
